Flare 2.4 is the fourth chapter of Flare. The broken trigger breaks its subjects, the humans it effects and the parahumans who witness.
Plot[]
The broken trigger continues and the capes scramble to evacuate the crowd. Crystal uses forcefields and lasers to block off civilians from suicidally rushing in to get powers, while Victoria pushes against the crowd with her aura. One worker meets a particularly gruesome fate when a fractal tree obliterates his body cavity, though his demise ironically helps to barricade the rest of the mob. Despite all the screaming and chaos, the irrational drive for powers continues further away in the crowd. In frustration, Victoria tosses a car to block one group of civilians. A man gets through and is immediately killed when his Corona Pollentia becomes locked in space. Another victim, Anne, is tormented by the same affliction, suspended in mid-air. Despite Victoria and Crystal’s best efforts, Anne succumbs, but not before laying a hand on Victoria’s cheek. The affected area continues to distort as the body count rises. Victoria and Crystal resort to manhandling any stragglers and flying them away from the mob, assisted by the powers of Vista, who is on the scene. One of the victims lashes out with her own brand of spatial distortion, requiring an intervention from Victoria.
As the capes evacuate people from nearby buildings, the chaos cools down. The number of broken triggers total up to 92, according to Typhlosis, and most of them are in bad shape. Victoria manages to find temporary peace in the fact that Vista survived Gold Morning. The PRTCJ field leader, Rocketround, presses Victoria for more details on the nature of broken triggers. Typhlosis reports the final trigger pulse, with only four victims still alive. The troop of heroes advance to one of the survivors, a man encased in fragments of his surroundings. The man describes a sense of being on a precipice, ‘like [he’s] on the lip of a volcano’, even more than the other capes. Only a few moments later, his cocoon shatters, taking his life with it. None of the broken triggers are left.
Ten days later, Victoria and Crystal share some ice cream and a bad movie, as Crystal is still struggling to advance past the trauma of that fateful night. The following Sunday, Victoria finally has a chance to meet with Jessica Yamada at a coffee shop. Hunter, the new parahuman reported to Jessica, is in stable condition and would like to meet with Victoria. Jessica is busy and worried about many of her transitory patients, pivoting to the purpose of their meeting: she thinks that she has made a mistake, and that Victoria could be able to help.
