Daybreak 1.5 is the fifth chapter of Daybreak. The situation becomes evermore complicated, and the mercenaries' motives remain opaque.
Summary[]
In the absence of further instruction from Crystalclear, Victoria waits and peers into the main room of the community center, sighting Kingdom Come’s thralls. Kingdom Come (via a controlled police officer) is occupied in a discussion with an uncontrolled woman, presumably the district representative. He promises to repair and protect the community from further damage if the authorities hand over Fume Hood without protest. When the rep inquires further, he explains that many thinkers believe something must be done to “vent the pressure” and ensure stability in the city.
Kingdom Come’s thralls notice and approach Victoria’s hiding place, guns raised, though refraining from further violence. Victoria contemplates how to deal with the situation without endangering the controlled civilians. She has to reign in her instincts and her powers, tainted by her traumatic past. A distraction from one of Crystalclear’s blasts provides the opportunity for her to quickly disarm several of the thralls before escaping by flying through the ceiling.
As she barricades the door of the nearest stairwell, Victoria reminisces on her experiences with Dean. Studying strategies to use against different power types and scheduling nightly patrols without other distractions. Once she begins to agonize over Amy, she pulls herself back into reality and decides to target the villains on the second floor. Nursery and Snag are being held off by Fume Hood, with Snag anxious about the “new player” (Victoria) and Nursery content that her manufactured sanctuary provides all the protection they need. In communication with an unknown party, Snag reveals that Blindside had faked incapacitation and mentions that they may have to resort to “Plan B”. He then leaves the room. Victoria faces off against Nursery but chooses to retreat, knowing better than to fight a shaker in their domain.
Victoria runs to the other stairwell, only to find a detached robotic arm closed around the door. Staff and patrol workers on the other side warn her of a bomb, which the villains have maintained as a bargaining chip during their attack. Before she could decide her next course of action, Snag’s arms break through the wall and restrain her. The surprise pushes Victoria to unleash her violent impulses.
