Summary[]
Two years since Gold Morning, refugees from Earth Bet persist in constructing and populating The City, a metropolis on the northeast coast of Earth Gimel's North America. Our protagonist, Victoria Dallon, is responsible for training a high school patrol block established by Sean Gilpatrick. Gilpatrick sends her patrol (including her friend Jasper) on a mission to guard Fume Hood, a villain-turned-hero set to debut at the Norfair Community Center. She agrees, wary of anti-parahuman sentiment and Fume Hood's involvement in a tragic accident years ago.
Despite the protection of Victoria's patrol and the local heroes, the Community Center is attacked by a group of parahuman mercenaries led by Lord of Loss. The mercenaries are ostensibly out to capture Fume Hood, but Victoria suspects that there are ulterior motives at play. During the attack, Victoria releases an aura of fear while battling against Snag, a cluster cape with emotion-affecting gauntlets. The fight ends abruptly when Fume Hood is shot (non-fatally) by a civilian, and the villains agree to leave. Gilpatrick reluctantly informs Victoria that she has lost her position, with her powers and mental state an apparent danger to the new recruits.
Later that night, she attends a barbecue with her family, only to learn that her mom invited Amy, Victoria's adopted sister. Amy's actions afflicted Victoria with a warped body and psyche for years at the Parahuman Asylum. The experience has distorted her powers, and the memories haunt Victoria on a daily basis. Victoria leaves the party in disgust, vowing to find a new home away from her immediate family. After spending the night at her former workplace, her cousin Crystal offers accommodations. Victoria expresses her duty to perform hero work, despite regretting the aggression she exhibited under the identity of Glory Girl. Gilpatrick brings in Jessica Yamada, Victoria's former therapist at the Asylum. Jessica, though currently occupied with other parahuman clients, offers to befriend Victoria and guide her recovery.
In the interlude, Prancer and his accomplices arrive at The Lodge, a corner world villain hideout. Lord of Loss's team arrives shortly after and earns the right to meet with Marquis on the second floor. Prancer develops a covert plan to unite the other B-list villains and carve out their own niche.
